Scotland Yard says a 23-year-old man arrested in connection with the failed attacks on London’s transport network on 21 July has been charged under terrorism legislation.

Ismael Abdurahman, of Newport Street, Kennington, southeast London, is the first suspect to be charged in relation to the attacks.

He will appear before Bow Street Magistrates in London tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Zambia has said it will deport a British citizen to his home country following his arrest on suspicion of terrorism.

Haroon Aswat, 31, has been named in media reports as the alleged mastermind behind the bombings that killed 56 people in London on 7 July.

He was arrested in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, two weeks ago.

Mr Aswat is also wanted for questioning by American authorities about alleged attempts to set up a terrorist training camp in the state of Oregon.

Rise in Muslim attacks

Figures released by police in London show that the number of attacks on Muslims in the city has risen by almost 600% since the bombings of 7 July.

Most of the incidents involved verbal abuse or assaults, but they also included damage to property, including mosques.

Today, police will have to decide whether to charge or release one of the main suspects in the attempted bombings on 21 July.

Yasin Hassan Omar, suspected of trying to bomb Warren Street station, was arrested in Birmingham last week.
