Twenty-seven people, mostly children, were killed in a suicide car bomb attack near a US checkpoint in Iraq.
At least 67 people were also wounded when the bomber blew up his vehicle near US troops in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
One US soldier was among those killed, and three were among the injured.
In a separate attack overnight in the town of Jalowla in eastern Iraq, two people were killed and 16 others hurt when a bomb exploded at a Sunni mosque.
Six of those injured are said to be in a serious condition.
Police said the bomber might have been inside the mosque preparing for an attack when the explosives detonated prematurely.
