Brussels - International Iraq conference
Brussels - International Iraq conference

The European Union and the United States have been leading calls for international help for Iraq at a conference in Brussels organised to discuss rebuilding the country.

Foreign ministers from more than 70 nations are attending the event.

At the start of the conference the Iraqi Prime Minister, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, appealed for assistance in the fight against insurgency and appealed to donors to honour their pledges of aid.

For their part, foreign governments urged the Iraqi leadership to ensure that the country's disaffected Sunni Muslim minority played a part in its future.

Delegates also urged its neighbouring countries to tighten border security.

Today’s gathering is intended to be a symbolic show of support by the international community for the new interim government of Iraq.

There will be no financial pledges, nor will there be any discussion of security issues.

US claims capture of 30 Iraqi insurgents

Meanwhile, in Iraq, US military officials say that troops, led by their forces, have captured 30 suspected insurgents in various parts of the country.

Iraqi and US soldiers seized 12 'suspected terrorists' in three different parts of Baghdad, a US military statement said.

The officials said the arrests and seizure of bombs was made possible because of reports from Iraqi citizens.

They also said that the Iraqi security forces were becoming more independent and more confident in their own capabilities.
