A garda spokesman has confirmed that a garda on duty outside the US Embassy in south Dublin has been suspended while an investigation is carried out into a number of alleged offences including drinking on duty and drink driving.

The officer’s suspension follows an alleged series of events last weekend.

The alleged actions of the officer, who was on temporary plain clothes armed guard duty at the embassy in Ballsbridge, are now being internally investigated by the gardaí.

However, a garda spokesman said he could also face criminal charges arising from an alleged incident of drink driving the same day.

The area around the US Embassy is protected 24 hours a day by gardaí due to the risk of terrorist attack.

US marines protect the inside of the compound and building, which is considered US territory.
