The American Civil Liberties Union has released documents from the FBI which record that prisoners at Guantanamo Bay saw guards flush copies of the Koran down toilets.
The allegations from prisoners at Guantanamo come from FBI documents released under a freedom of information lawsuit filed by the union.
The documents refer to notes made by an FBI interrogator in 2002, which record prisoners’ allegations that the Muslim holy book, the Koran, had been desecrated by camp guards.
Last week, Newsweek was forced to retract a report of a similar claim from an unpublished US army investigation, as it could not be substantiated.
The magazine was also heavily criticised by the US government.
The latest documents also contain allegations of beatings and sexual assault and follow an Amnesty International report which brands Guantanamo as the ‘Gulag’ of our times.
