The Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, has said security in his country must be strengthened following violent protests in the eastern city of Jalalabad.
At least four people were killed and 50 injured after police opened fire to break up an anti-US protest in the city, which is 130km east of the capital, Kabul.
The demonstration was sparked by a report in Newsweek magazine that claimed US personnel had flushed a copy of the Islamic holy book, the Koran, down the toilet at a prison camp in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
Mr Karzai made the comments to reporters in Brussels during a visit to NATO headquarters.
