Twenty-four men went on trial in Madrid today, charged with terrorist offences.
Three are facing charges of involvement with the 11 September 2001 al-Qaeda attacks on the US.
The 24 are among a total of 41 people indicted by the Spanish anti-terror Judge Baltasar Garzon.
The accused include the alleged head of the al-Qaeda cell, Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas, also known as 'Abu Dahdah', a Syrian who is accused of arranging a meeting allegedly attended by one of the 19 attackers.
Another accused, Ghassub Al Abrash Ghaylun, is charged with filming New York's World Trade Center and giving the tapes to militants before the US attacks.
A third, Driss Chebli, allegedly organised a meeting in July 2001 at Tarragona on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, during which the details of the 11 September attacks were finalised.
Prosecutors are expected to demand a full 25-year sentence in relation to each of the almost 3,000 lives lost in the attacks.
