Anti-Japanese protests in China have spread to the north-eastern industrial city of Shenyang, where rioters threw stones and paint at the Japanese consulate.

Yesterday thousands of people marched on the Japanese consulate in Shanghai.

Japan's Foreign Minister, Nobutaka Machimura, has arrieved in Japan to express concern at the violence.  Mr Machimura is holding crisis talks in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing.

The unrest was prompted by claims that new Japanese school textbooks play down Japan's atrocities during its occupation of China in the 1930s and 40s.

There is also dissent in China over Japan’s bid to join the United Nations Security Council.
