Progress in tackling TB, says WHO

The World Health Organisation has said global efforts to overcome tuberculosis are making steady progress but serious problems remain in tackling the disease in Africa.

In a new report, the UN body said the disease had reached alarming proportions on the African continent, where co-infection with the HIV virus makes a lethal combination.

The WHO's Director-General, Dr Lee Jong-wook, said the rate of TB infections had tripled in some African countries since 1990.
