Iraqi commandos kill 85 insurgents

The Iraqi government has confirmed its forces killed 85 insurgents at a rebel training camp north of Baghdad in what would be one of the highest guerrilla death tolls in the two-year insurgency.

The US military provided ground and air support for Iraqi police commandos.

The Iraqi government said foreign fighters were among the militants in the hours-long battle and an Algerian was captured.

Seven police commandos died in the clashes in a remote region near a lake 160km northwest of Baghdad.
