Four prominent US Senators who met the family of the murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney earlier this week have taken a further step to put pressure on the Republican movement.

Senators Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd and John McCain have sponsored a Senate motion condemning the murder and the attempts by the IRA to cover it up.

The four have also called on the Sinn Féin leadership to insist that those responsible for the killing and witnesses to the crime should co-operate fully with the police.

The motion also states that the US government should offer all appropriate assistance to law enforcement authorities in Northern Ireland to see that Mr McCartney’s murders are brought to justice.
