The makers of condoms, Durex, and the Irish Medicines Board have warned that up to 500,000 counterfeit condoms are in circulation in the Irish market.
Between 70,000 and 75,000 boxes of counterfeit Durex Extra Safe 12 pack and Durex Fetherlite 12 pack were distributed to pharmacies throughout Ireland in May 2004.
The Irish Medicines Board says 35,000 boxes have been recalled from pharmacies in the past week. However, about 40,000 boxes had already been sold.
Anyone who has purchased a packet of Durex Fetherlite or Extra Safe condoms should check the outer packet and the condom foil for the batch details.
If the batch number on the packet is either VR3073C or 20602503 the products are counterfeit.
Condoms not displaying the above codes are authentic Durex products and are safe to use.
