Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has arrived in Gaza City ahead of key talks with militant leaders in a bid to secure their agreement to the ceasefire declared at a peace summit earlier this week.

The talks come on the heels of renewed mortar and rocket attacks on Gaza settlements yesterday claimed by Hamas.

The strikes occurred just days after Mr Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared an end to four years of hostilities.

Mr Abbas dismissed three senior security officers after the attacks.

The three included the armed forces commander and the national police chief.

Israel warned that if Mr Abbas cannot stop the attacks, it may take action against the militants despite the ceasefire deal.

The US said the sackings underlined Mr Abbas' determination to end the violence.
