West African states have condemned the decision by the armed forces in Togo to hand power to the son of the late leader Gnassingbe Eyadema.
The regional grouping ECOWAS described the move as an 'army takeover'.
The Togolese army yesterday said that Faure Gnassingbe would lead the country following the sudden death of veteran leader Gnassingbe Eyadema, after an illness.
The move, which is said to be contrary to the Togolese constitution, has also been condemned by the pan-continental African Union in Addis Ababa.
