Tamil Tigers to meet Norwegian minister

The political leader of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers has said it is very difficult to predict the outcome of next Wednesday's planned meeting between the Tigers' Commander and the Norwegian Foreign Minister.

SP Thamilchelvan confirmed to RTÉ News that the elusive Velupillai Prabhakaran would meet Minister Jan Peterson at an unnamed location in Tiger-controlled territory.

It effectively scotches rumours that the commander had been killed in the tsunami disaster.

The meeting is part of Norway's first post-tsunami attempt to salvage Sri Lanka's faltering peace process.

Three days before the 26 December tsunamis, the Tamil Tigers rejected Sri Lanka's latest proposal to revive negotiations, despite international pressure to save the Norwegian-backed initiative.
