The number of racist incidents in Ireland has almost doubled since 2001, according to new figures published today.
The findings are detailed in a new report by the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism.
It shows that 70 racist incidents occurred between May and October this year, compared with 41 incidents when records began in 2001.
These include assaults or attempted assaults, harassment and offensive verbal abuse or gestures.
NCCRI Director Philip Watt described it as a 'worrying' development.
Meanwhile, Chairperson Anastasia Crickley said stronger co-operation between EU states is needed if the problem is to be adequately addressed.
The committee works with Government and non-Governmental organisations to provide advice and develop initiatives to address racism in Ireland.
