Work to complete the final section of Dublin's M50 has been thrown into doubt again.
Protestors campaigning to preserve the ruins of the medieval Carrickmines Castle in south Dublin have announced they are going to the Supreme Court.
Earlier this month, the High Court ruled that legislation permitting road construction was not unconstitutional. However, lawyers for conservationist Dominic Dunne have now lodged papers with the Supreme Court.
A source close to the Carrickmines campaign said the motivation for the appeal centred not just on Carrickmines Castle, but on the fact that 10% of archaeological features have disappeared between 1991 and 2002.
Despite today's announcement, the Castle's fosse, or sunken wall, has been dismantled and removed over the past three weeks by archaeologists working for Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council and the National Roads Authority.
