Westminster debate disrupted by protestors

Proceedings in the House of Commons at Westminster were suspended for almost half an hour this afternoon when five pro-hunt demonstrators broke into the chamber.

MPs had been debating proposals to ban hunting with dogs in England and Wales. The measure was passed by 356 to 166 votes, a majority of 190.

Earlier, as thousands gathered outside Westminster, there were violent clashes between police and some pro-hunt protesters.

Scuffles broke out as protesters set off fireworks and lobbed plastic bottles and placards at lines of uniformed police officers.

The police then used their batons on a section of the crowd. A number of people were reported injured.

Elsewhere, a Fathers 4 Justice campaigner charged in connection with the House of Commons flour attack on the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, last May has been convicted of disorderly behaviour.

At Bow Street Magistrates Court, Ron Davis was given a two year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £500 costs.
