UN warning on global spread of HIV/AIDS

The UN agency for combating HIV/AIDS has warned that global attempts to stop the spread of the illness are not working.

A report, just published, says five million people became infected with the virus last year and that the number of people living with HIV has risen in every region.

It says the disease is spreading quickly in Asia. That region accounted for more than a fifth of infections last year, making it similar to the situation in Africa 15 years ago.

However, sub-Saharan Africa remains the worst affected area.

The UN says that if infection rates continue and large-scale treatment is not available, more than half of today's 15-year-olds in the region will not reach their 60th birthday.
