Parents warned over wildcat sightings

Gardaí have called on parents in the Newbliss area of Co Monaghan to keep their children indoors during the hours of darkness following reported sightings of a wildcat in the area.

Gardaí  met with officials from the Department of Agriculture this afternoon to discuss the attack on a herd of calves on Friday and Saturday night and will issue a statement shortly.

Over the past few months reports have come in of a sighting of a wildcat in the area.

There was no definite proof of the existence of the cat until last Friday night when a herd was attacked and a calf was half eaten. The next night the herd was attacked again.

The gardaí in Clones are taking the matter seriously and are having a briefing to discuss the issuing of a statement to parents in the area as a precautionary measure.
