Fallujah - 22 killed in US attack

The US military has been defending an air strike on the city of Falluja saying the target was a safe house used by militants under the command of the al-Qaeda leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Twenty two Iraqis were killed in the missile strike.

Zarqawi has been blamed by the US for the beheading of Nick Berg, the American contractor whose death was filmed and broadcast on the Internet.

Hundreds of residents of Falluja died in April when US forces sealed off the town and attacked militants.

Two killed in roadside bomb in Iraq

Meanwhile, a Portuguese security guard and an Iraqi policeman were killed when a roadside bomb exploded in southern Iraq this morning.

A local police officer said the bomb was detonated as the Portuguese guard's car drove past on a highway west of Basra.

Witnesses said the vehicle targeted in the blast was of the type used by security guards protecting Iraq's oil infrastructure.
