34 peasants killed by Colombian guerrillas

Up to 34 people were killed by Colombian guerrillas in what is described as the worst massacre since the country's President, Alvaro Uribe, took office nearly two years ago.

Survivors said the killers - thought to be members of the radical Marxist group, FARC - pulled the victims from their homes, bound their hands and feet and then shot them execution-style.

The killings occurred in a village close to the Venezuelan border, almost 300 miles northeast of Bogota early on Tuesday.

The guerrillas had accused the peasants of picking coca leaf for right-wing paramilitaries.
