12 Russian military and police personnel have been killed in a double ambush in the southern Russian republic of Chechnya, according to security officials.

Four policemen were killed after their vehicle struck a landmine.

Eight soldiers were later killed when their armoured troop carrier, which went to help, hit a second mine and also came under fire from rebels.

It is thought another seven people were wounded in the incident.
