Russian scientist jailed for spying

A judge in Moscow has jailed a scientist who was found guilty of spying for the west to 15 years, in a controversial case criticised by human rights activists and lawyers as unfair and rigged.

Nuclear weapons expert Igor Sutyagin had been convicted of treason by a jury after being found guilty of passing classified information to a British firm alleged to be a front for the American Central Intelligence Agency.

Sutyagin denied spying. He said he wrote an analysis based on information already in the public domain.
