Woman charged over Sydney riot

A 37-year-old woman has become the first person to be charged in connection with last weekend's riots in Sydney.

Marilyn Cargill is the aunt of the Aboriginal teenager, Thomas Hickey, whose death sparked a night of unrest in the inner city district of Redfern.

She has appeared before a magistrates' court, charged with riot, affray, violent disorder and throwing a missile.

The judge remanded her in custody, refusing bail which would allow her to attend her nephew's funeral on Tuesday.
