The UN agency for Palestinian refugees has warned it may not be able to cope with the number of people made homeless by Israeli demolitions of property in the Gaza Strip.
During a visit to the area, the head of the agency, Peter Hansen, described the scale of the destruction as 'disproportionate', and said it could not be justified.
Figures from the UN show that more than 10,000 homes have been destroyed since October 2000, and that the rate of demolitions is escalating dramatically.
Israeli officials claim the houses are being demolished because Palestinians use them either as firing positions, or to conceal tunnels.
