UN urged to send team to Iraq

The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan says the United States and Iraqi leaders have asked the UN to send a team to Iraq to advise on the feasibility of quick elections or alternatives in selecting a new Iraqi government.

Mr Annan made the comments after he had a meeting with the Iraqi Governing Council and the US administrator of Iraq, Paul Bremer.

Mr Annan said he had not yet made a decision and further discussions were necessary.

The UN withdrew from Iraq last October after a suicide attack in August destroyed its headquarters and killed 20 people, including its envoy.

The US wants the UN to back their plans to restore Iraqi sovereignty before holding full democratic elections.
