Gardaí arrest 130 in drug crackdown

Gardaí in Dublin have begun arresting over 130 people who sold them drugs in the past six weeks.

The arrests are part of Operation Cleanstreets, set up by the Garda National Drugs Unit to tackle drug dealing on the streets.

Undercover Gardaí spent the last six weeks buying heroin, ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis from street dealers all over Dublin. Over 100 were heroin dealers, 15 sold them cocaine, 10 ecstasy while the remainder sold cannabis.

A Nigerian man known to be selling crack cocaine in Dublin's north inner city was also targeted. Officers from the Garda National Drugs Unit bought three rocks of the highly-addictive drug, crack cocaine, from him for €120.

Operation Cleanstreets also highlighted parts of Ballyfermot, Thomas Street, Meath Street and Clondalkin as drugs blackspots in Dublin. Eight pubs were also identified as venues where drugs could be bought.
