Man (36) dies after Dublin assault

Gardaí have launched an investigation following the death of a man who was assaulted in Dublin city centre last week.

36-year-old James Kavanagh from Malahide had been in a critical condition in the Mater Hospital since he was assaulted near a bus stop on Eden Quay last Tuesday.

He died in the Mater Hospital yesterday evening.

Mr Kavanagh was standing at the 77A bus stop on Eden Quay in the centre of Dublin at about 9.00pm last Tuesday night when he was attacked by three men.

It is understood that he was punched or pushed to the ground, sustaining severe head injuries.

The three men escaped, leaving him lying unconscious on the ground.

He was brought to the Mater Hospital where he remained on a life support machine until his death at 5.15pm yesterday evening.

The Gardaí at Store Street have now launched an investigation and are appealing for any witnesses to the assault on James Kavanagh to come forward.

They are also investigating the possibility that there may have been some kind of altercation outside a pub earlier the same evening between Mr Kavanagh and the three men who later assaulted him.
