Links alleged between Iraq and Al Qaeda

A British newspaper says one of its journalists in Baghdad has found documentary evidence showing a direct link between the former Iraqi authorities and the Al Qaeda network.

The Sunday Telegraph newspaper says the official document shows that an Al Qaeda envoy based in Sudan met with intelligence authorities in Baghdad in March 1998.

The meeting allegedly took place so that both parties could discuss their mutual hatred of Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Saddam Hussein's government always maintained it had no links with Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network.
