Brothers jailed for farmer's death

Two Dublin men have been jailed for 15 and 12 years for killing an elderly County Meath farmer.

Brothers Christopher and John Doyle, both originally from Fatima Mansions in Dublin, pleaded guilty in the Central Criminal Court to the manslaughter of Paddy Logan.

The 81-year-old was killed at his home in Castlejordan, County Meath in June 2000.

Peter and Paddy Logan were listening to a Westmeath-Laois GAA match on the radio when the Doyles came to their home.

John Doyle, a 35-year-old father of seven and his 29-year-old brother, Christopher Doyle, a father of three, beat the men and killed Paddy Logan, for the sake of £45.

Mr. Justice Paul Carney said no sentence was adequate to acknowledge the horror of this crime. He added that another decent man had had the rest of his life destroyed.

The surviving brother Peter, leaving court today with Gardaí from Tullamore who investigated this case, said he felt lost without his brother and that he had never returned to the farm because of his fear.
