Bushfires "worst in Australia's history"
Sunday, 6 January 2002 12:20Firefighters battling bushfires in Australia have intensified their efforts to take advantage of cooler conditions to try to contain the blazes ahead of high temperatures and higher winds, which are expected tomorrow.
As about 80 fires raged for the 14th day, the New South Wales Emergency Services Minister, Bob Debus, that said the bushfires were the worst in Australia's history.
Mr Debus said that the cost of the fire operation thus far was up to 35 million US dollars. He warned that the fires could blaze for weeks, unless there was some really heavy rain.

The government of the state of New South Wales says the cost of containing bushfires has all ready cost the equivalent of almost 40m euro.
