Dissident Republicans blamed for attempted Derry attack

Dissident Republicans are being blamed for trying to carry out a booby-trap bomb attack in Derry. The remote-control device had been left in a car at Victoria Road and was defused by British Army experts last night following a three-day security operation. Superintendent Peter Sheridan of the RUC said that the bomb was a sophisticated remote-controlled device that had been intended to lure police to a fake traffic accident and kill them. The Vauxhall Nova had been pushed into a lamp post and left with its windscreen shattered.
