A 17-year-old amateur soccer player has been charged with the murder of a goalkeeper during a match in Northern Ireland. Samuel Reid, aged 25, died yesterday after allegedly being assaulted on the pitch during the game at Newtownabbey between Sporting Lisburn Road and Glenville Stars. Mr Reid, who was from Cookstown, was treated by paramedics at the scene but was dead on arrival at hospital. The RUC said that the 17-year-old would appear at Belfast Magistrates Court tomorrow morning. He was charged following the results of a post mortem.
In a separate incident, the RUC uncovered two pipe bombs, a handgun and ammunition during a search in the Crumlin Road area of Belfast last night. The items were found in a yard and alleyway at the back of a house in Silvio Street at around 11.00pm. The items have been taken away for forensic examination. Two men have been arrested and are assisting the RUC with their inquiries.
