Gardaí investigate breach of Eircom e-mail security

Gardaí are investigating a security breach by a computer hacker who gained access to the files of 30,000 Irish internet users. Ireland's leading internet service provider, Eircom, is changing its passwords as a precautionary measure. The company says last night's security breach could have led to interference with e-mails and websites, but there is no evidence that there was any such interference.

The company is changing the passwords of 30,000 of its 240,000 customers. Eircom said that it was working closely with the Gardaí to trace the source of the break-in. Eircom owns two Internet companies, Eircom Net and Indigo. Eircom has set up a helpline to deal with enquiries: 1890 787 337. The phone line will be closed at midnight, and reopened at 7.00 tomorrow.
