Property developer denies giving money to Charles Haughey

The property developer, John Byrne, has told the Moriarty Tribunal that he never gave the former Taoiseach, Charles Haughey, "a penny in his life, or a pound". Mr Byrne had been called to explain how more than £300,000 of his money found its way into bank accounts which were used by Mr Haughey.

The tribunal is examining two cheques. Mr Byrne has claimed the second for £260,000 was to pay off a loan. But, the tribunal has heard that this loan had been paid off two years previously. The tribunal heard, however that this loan had been paid off two years previously. Mr Byrne agreed that a situation where his company paid off a loan that did not exist seemed crazy, but added that the entire matter remained a mystery to him.

Earlier, a former senior executive of the Guinness and Mahon Bank, Padraig Collery told the Tribunal he was probably the person who falsified documents within the bank concerning a loan linked to Mr Byrne.
