Sonia O'Sullivan has given birth to a baby girl. The Minister for Sport Dr Jim Mcdaid has congratulated her and her partner on behalf of the nation.

The Cobh athlete gave birth to a girl at a private maternity hospital near London in the early hours of this morning. Her partner, former Australian athlete Nick Beedo, was at her side during the delivery. Her parents Mary and John are now on their way to London.

Sonia could now resume winter training after taking a year off to have her baby, and prepare for the Sydney Olympics.
