Minister and OPW back plans for Burren centre

The Minister for the Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Síle DeValera, and the OPW have told a planning inquiry in Ennis, that a proposed visitor centre for the Burren would have no significant adverse affect on the area and would cause little visual intrusion. An Taisce and the Burren Action Group believe the development would ruin the environment.
The Arts and Heritage Minister and the OPW have opened their appeal against a decision by Clare County Council to refuse permisson for a scaled down visitor centre at Mullaghmore in the Burren. They told a Bord Pleanala oral hearing in Ennis today that the proposed centre was designed to have minimal visual intrusion on the landscape.
An Taisce and the Burren action group remain firmly opposed to the development and say that the planning refusal should be upheld. They believe the development would ruin the environment in what is regarded as one of the world's unique landscapes. The hearing will last seven days and a decision is due on October 13.
