Four remanded in connection with Galway statue damage

Four men were remanded in custody by a special court in Galway last night on charges of damaging the statue of Padraig O Conaire at Eyre Square. They are also accused of stealing the head of the statue, valued at £50,000.

The men who have addresses in Armagh are Gareth Leahy and John McManus both aged twenty, Gareth O'Connor aged nineteen and Gavin McNaney aged eighteen. They are due in court again on Monday.

The head of the statue was hacked off sometime during Thursday night. The four men were arrested yesterday afternoon as they attempted to board a bus for Belfast. The men had the head of the statue in a bag.
