Man charged over "Melissa" computer virus

A thirty-year-old man has been brought before a Court in New Jersey charged with generating the computer virus known as Melissa that has caused havoc in thousands of companies and Government agencies around the world. The virus attacks electronic mail systems known as e-mail.

David Smith was released on bail after being charged on five counts of violating the state's computer laws. If convicted, Smith, could face a lengthy prison sentence and a fine of more than £300,000.
