The retired head of the National Toll Roads Company has confirmed to RTÉ News that he gave the former assistant Dublin City and County Manager, George Redmond ten thousand pounds. He says that it was a personal thank you for his help in acquiring lands for the building of the West Link Toll Bridge.
Tom Roche told RTÉ News that he gave the money to Mr. Redmond at about the time the former Assistant City and County Manager was retiring from his post. He says that Mr. Redmond never asked him for money and, as far as he was concerned, there was no impropriety in what happened.
In a separate development, RTÉ News has been told by a building contractor that he gave Dublin County Council a piece of land, needed for the West Link toll bridge, free of charge in return for bye-law approval for a development he was planning. The builder claims that a prominent Fianna Fáil politician was involved in the transfer of the documents.
