Sport: Darcy best of Irish at British Masters

In golf The British Masters started at Woburn this morning. 5 members of Europe's Ryder Cup team were in action including Darren Clarke. The Irish contingent also includes Paul McGinley, John McHenry, Philip Walton, Des Smyth, Richie Coughlan and Eamonn Darcy. However it was Darcy who made a good start to this latest European tour event shooting a 3-under-par 69 and lies 4 off the lead currently held by Stephen Allen of Australia who is 7 under after a round of 65.

Colin Montgomerie maintained his excellent form in winning his last two European events and shot a five under-par 67 to share second place. Richard Coughlin finished on level par while Paul McGinley is one-under after 18. Darren Clarke, managed to leave himself one-under par overnight after running up a bogey six on the fourth and also having a double-bogey on the 16th. Open champion Paul Lawrie finished on 76.
