Arsenal have beaten Manchester United 2-1 to win the Charity Shield at Wembley. United took the lead when a David Beckham free kick hit the crossbar, rebounded and was put in by Dwight Yorke. But in an ill-temepered game, Nwanko Kanu equalised from the spot after Denis Irwin had brought down Patrick Vieira. 10 minutes later, Ray Parlour scored the winner to give Arsenal the torphy and the psychological edge before the start of the Premiership season.
