Probe into illegal Clones dump continues

Investigations by Monaghan County Council and the local gardaí into an illegal dump near Clones are continuing.

Several thousand tonnes of mainly domestic waste have been uncovered at the site. Preliminary examinations indicate that most of the material came from the Cork and Waterford areas.

Gerry Kelly, senior environmental engineer with Monaghan County Council, said they would be writing to the people identifiable from the refuse and asking them how their rubbish ended up in an illegal dump in Co Monaghan.

Two Northern Ireland registered lorries, containing waste believed to have been bound for the illegal dump, are still detained by Monaghan gardaí while the refuse is examined.
