The newly crowned European Champion in elite boxing, Aoife O'Rourke, has said she hopes to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by taking part in the qualifiers in London and Paris next year.

Speaking to RTÉ News, O'Rourke said the Womens World Boxing Championship in Russia next month is also a possibility for her. However, she may decide to focus instead on the elite national championships in November here in Ireland.

"I’m fully focused on trying to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo," she said. "But the experience of taking part in the qualifiers in Paris and London next year would also be good for my confidence."

O’Rourke said that taking part in the Olympic games would be "a dream come true".

"That's where every athlete wants to get, everyone wants to be on the Olympic stage."

O’Rourke is also joined on the Irish women's boxing team by her sister Lisa who is presently competing in Bulgaria.
