Moore, Christy
Irish singer songwriter Christy Moore was born in Newbridge, County Kildare in 1945.
Christy Moore is known for his folk songs, distinctive voice and storytelling style and found success with Planxty, Moving Hearts and as a solo musician.
His first album 'Paddy on the Road' was released in 1969. In 1972, he brought together musicians such as Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny and Liam Óg O'Flynn to record his album 'Prosperous'. They later went on to form Planxty. In 1980, he formed Moving Hearts along with Donal Lunny and others.
Christy Moore is known for his activism. Songs are often inspired by Irish nationalism, injustice, working class struggles and personal experiences. He has maintained that his primary motivation is a desire to entertain.
He has recorded his own songs, those of other people and traditional songs. Some of his most popular recordings are 'Ride On', 'Don't Forget Your Shovel', 'Lisdoonvarna', 'The City of Chicago', 'The Parting Glass' and 'Black is the Colour'.
Throughout his long musical career, Christy has made many appearances on RTÉ television and radio.
