Patrick Mason discusses ' By the Bog of Cats' by Marina Carr.
Patrick Mason was artistic director of the Abbey from 1993 to 1999. Here he talks about one of the productions staged during his tenure, 'By the Bog of Cats' by Marina Carr in 1998.
This was Carr's first play to be performed on the main Abbey stage. Previous works had been shown on the theatre's smaller Peacock stage and Mason felt it was time to try something on a larger scale. Carr's fascination with the Greek Medea, who kills her children, was transformed into 'By the Bog of Cats', with a grotesque and gothic catwoman haunting the bog.
