The strikers travel to South Africa for Nelson Mandela’s funeral.

Nelson Mandela died in Johannesburg at the age of 95 in December 2013. He had served as South Africa’s first black president from 1994 to 1999. All of the former Dunnes Stores strikers went to South Africa for his funeral.

In this ‘Morning Edition’ report, Kate Egan talks to Mary Manning outside Mandela House, the museum in Soweto that was once Mandela’s home.  All the strikers are there with Brendan Archbold, who was their union organiser.  Manning recalls what the strike was like all those years ago. This is the first time they have been in South Africa as a group since their failed attempt to enter the country in 1985 and “it’s great to finally set foot on a free South Africa”.
