PJ Gilmore and his brother ran a chain of small cinemas in Mayo and Galway in the 1950s but found it difficult to get audiences in hard times. PJ Gilmore acquired a 16mm film camera and began to film local events, football matches, weddings and church ceremonies, the St. Patrick’s day parade, country fairs and fairgrounds, showjumping, horse-racing, dancehalls all of which attracted and delighted local audiences. The films, many of them in colour, were made during the 1950s, 60s and 70s and cover aspects of life in Galway and Mayo at that time. The Gilmore films captured shopfronts, cars, local events and social occasions and of course there are the people - children in knitted jumpers, girls with ribbons in their hair, and men dressed in shirts, ties and jackets and women wearing hats and almost everyone seems to be smoking. The films of the late PJ Gilmore were donated to RTÉ Archives by his family. PJ Gilmore was the subject of Peter Feeney’s 1984 documentary 'The Flight from the Snipe Grass'. |
