Report about the plan to scrap the patrol vessel 'The Muirchu', referred to as 'The best-known ship in Ireland'.
A former shipmate on the 'The Muirchu', provides a short history of the vessel and describes the ship.
The ‘Muirchu’ was a Irish fishery protection vessel, which, when named ‘Helga’, as a British Naval craft, shelled Liberty Hall in 1916. It was bought by the Hammond Lane Metal Company Ltd to be broken up for scrap in May 1947. However, the vessel sunk on the way to the breaking yard on 8 May 1947.
